Chanbara

The Japanese long sword or Katana is considered the finest weapon in the world. The Samurai are legendary not only for their skills but for their philosophy or Bushido. Traditional ways of learning and practicing sword skills are difficult in our modern world. The foam padded Chanbara sword allows us to practice and enjoy the art of the sword in a safe manner while using full speed and contact.

Sword training at the Pyong Ahn Institute consists of kata (traditional forms) and techniques combined with full contact sparring. When the student reaches the black belt level they may begin training with wooden swords and ultimately with real swords. Such training requires great clarity of mind and a spirit of total self control clean of the distractions of thought.

During the summer we put down our Katana to make room for other weapons such as Bo Staff, Naginata, or Nunchaku. Click on Hardcore Outdoor for our exciting summer program.

Developed by Tanabe Tetsundo and some of the most influential martial arts practitioners and swordsmen in Japan, goshindo – more commonly known as chanbara, modernized the “art of combat practice” utilizing traditional ways and techniques. Special foam based weapons and light protective headgear is all that is required to indulge in one of the fastest growing combative sport of the 21st century.
