Sa Bom Nim William
B. Johns Jr. began his martial arts training at the age of 7. His
first instructor was his father, William Johns, Sr. In 1974, William Johns Jr. began training in Tang Soo Do (the
original name for our art in this country) under Harry Rowe Jr. He received
his first degree black belt just before moving to Melbourne, Florida to
attend college at Florida Tech were he began teaching. After his 2nd
degree dan test William Johns became a student of Master H. C. Hwang,
then Chairman of the Technical Advisory Committee and the son of our
Founder. Master Johns is currently a 6th degree dan.
For ten years Sa Bom Nim Johns attended the annual Ko Dan Ja Shim Sa, an
eight day residential program where he helped to train and test the
masters of our art. He has competed and coached nationally and
internationally.

Jo Kyo Nim Luke Lyons began his
training in Soo Bahk Do under, then Kyo Sa, Master Tom Reisman at the
age of 5 in New Paltz, New York. In 1996, Master Reisman left New Paltz
and Luke Lyons began training under Sa Bom Nim William Johns. In 1999,
he received his first degree black belt at the age of 11. At this time
he began teaching classes at the William Johns Karate Academy (Pyong Ahn
Institute). Two years later, in 2001, he received his second degree
black belt. In 2004, Luke Lyons received his Assistant Instructor
Certification (Jo Kyo Nim). Jo Kyo Nim Lyons is now a third degree black
belt. He is working towards his next rank test for fourth degree black
belt (Master) and Instructor Certification (Kyo Sa Nim). Upon the
departure of Sa Bom Nim William Johns, Jo Kyo Nim Lyons became a member
of the Yo Dan Ja Council and the Senior instructor of the Pyong Ahn
